Laugh For Your Life

Did you know laughing is good for your health?
Laughter is a natural physical and emotional reaction to humor. It seems simple enough. But is laughter actually the best medicine? The answer is yes. According to How It Works, there is strong evidence that laughter can actually improve health and help fight disease. Research shows that laughing by laughing decreases stress hormones immediately making the body calmer.
Laughing can help strengthen the immune system and help fight diseases by increasing immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies. Endorphins are released with laughter releasing natural chemicals producing the feeling of euphoria. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
The Best Medicine-final
Laughter produces physical benefits as well. For example, laughing enhances the body’s intake of oxygen, stimulates many organs including the heart, lungs and muscles. This results in the ease physical strain in the muscles, joints, and other body parts. The decrease of stress level and the increase of oxygen in turn lowers blood pressure, reducing the risk of stroke or heart attack.
Finally, laughing is a great workout. Only 15 minutes of laughter can burn up to 40 calories and is a great way to tone your abs. The physical act of laughing contracts and expands the muscles in your stomach, much like an ab workout.
So skip the gym today, and instead flip the channel to TruTV for a tummy workout and an episode of Impractical Jokers.

Before the Jokers

The hit comedy prank show Impractical Jokers didn’t air on TV until December of 2011, but its beginnings root further than that. The show follows four best friends; Joseph “Joe” Gatto, James “Murr” Murray, Brian “Q” Quinn, and Salvatore “Sal” Vulcano, who have been a close knit group since their days in high school. The four met in improve club freshman year at Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Island, New York.

In 1999, Sal, James, and Joe, along with their friends Gideon Horowitz and Mike Boccio, formed the nationally recognized improve comedy sketch group The Tenderloins. The name came from a lists the boys created, of words they feel embarrassed to say in public. The list also includes words such as gargoyle and culottes.

The group continued to grow in fame, traveling the country, performing in prominent comedy clubs and many renowned events including the San Francisco Sketch Comedy Festival.  Eventually, Horowitz and Boccio dropped the group for personal reasons, and Brian Quinn, or better known for his stage name, Q, joined the group.

As did most entertainers in the 2000s, the group turned to the internet to further their name. They produced and filmed comedy sketches, which they would post on MySpace and YouTube, racking up millions of views and subscribers. Eventually the group created a comedy podcast, the first episode going up in 2012. On the side, Sal and Q started their own podcast a year later called What Say You, which has won a Stitcher Award for Best New Show in 2013. The show was also nominated for two Podcast Awards; the Comedy Entertainment and Best Produced Award.

Spike TV signed the group as the main focus for a scripted comedy show in 2008, but dropped the idea after only a few months of production. However, the pilot still aired at the 2009 New York Television festival. In 2011, TruTV picked up the idea, but dropping the original script and taking it down the reality TV path. In December the show aired, gathering 1.5 million viewers and picking up 32 million viewers within the first season.

Seven years and six hilarious seasons later the show recently announced its renewal for season 7, set to premiere in 2018. Impractical Jokers has gone global, airing on TruTV, Comedy Central, and Comedy Central UK.
